However, this proposal contains significant shortcomings in addressing the climate crisis; among them are the absence of a just transition mechanism and a scientific advisory council.
In its current form, the bill defines just transition merely as a concept. It does not, however, provide for employment and social support mechanisms for workers, their families, or local communities. A just transition, one in which mine workers do not lose their jobs and no one is left behind, is essential.
Moreover, the draft law does not include an independent Scientific Advisory Council that would ground decision-making processes in scientific evidence and ensure transparency and accountability. Yet many countries have incorporated such bodies into their legislation to ensure that climate policies are credible and effective. Türkiye must take the same step.
Our call to Members of Parliament in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye is clear: the Climate Law must include just transition mechanisms and an independent Scientific Advisory Council.
Take action now and raise your voice to decision-makers.
